A void bet is a ticket the sportsbook cancels and refunds, and knowing when it happens saves you from surprises at settlement. This page sets out the common cases the way sportsbook rulebooks state them, with the arithmetic for each. For the settlement basics behind every market, read how sports betting works and how a ticket settles.
Every settlement convention here is common practice. The book’s own rules page governs your ticket.
When a bet is void
Rulebooks cancel a bet for a short list of reasons. The table gives the usual causes and what returns.
| Cause | Common result | You receive |
|---|---|---|
| Event postponed | Void | Stake |
| Athlete does not play | Void | Stake |
| Market withdrawn in error | Void | Stake |
| Result lands on the line | Push | Stake |
A void single returns the stake in full. A stake of 100 on a voided bet at 1.91 returns 100, not 191.
Push in betting
A push in betting is a result that lands exactly on a whole-number line. The bet is neither won nor lost, and the stake returns.
- Total set at 48, final total 48: push, stake returns.
- Spread set at -3, favourite wins by exactly 3: push.
- Football handicap -1, favourite wins by exactly 1: push.
Half-point lines such as 48.5 never push, which is why books use them. You can read how this applies to a football line in football betting markets and their handicap lines.
Voids inside a parlay
In a parlay, a void leg drops out and the rest settle. Take three legs at 1.91, 2.00 and 1.50.
- Full parlay price = 1.91 x 2.00 x 1.50 = 5.73. A stake of 100 would return 573.
- Leg two is void. New price = 1.91 x 1.50 = 2.865.
- The stake of 100 now returns 286.50 if both remaining legs win.
If a remaining leg loses, the ticket loses as normal. A void leg never turns a loss into a win.
Overtime betting rules
Overtime betting rules change by sport and by market. Common practice follows this pattern.
| Sport | Market | Overtime counts? |
|---|---|---|
| Basketball | Moneyline, spread, total | Yes |
| Basketball | Player props | Yes, stats include it |
| Football | Match result, totals | No: 90 min plus stoppage |
| Football | To qualify, to lift the cup | Yes, includes extra time |
A basketball game has 48 minutes of regulation and adds 5-minute overtime periods until a winner emerges, so most basketball markets include them. NBA player props and how a non-playing athlete voids them shows how this applies to a stat line.
Live betting rules
Live betting rules add a timing layer. The board changes as the event runs, and the book can suspend a market at any moment.
- A bet placed while a market is suspended is usually void and the stake returns.
- A bet placed before a goal or a score is accepted at the price you saw, subject to a short delay.
- A bet on a market that closes early, such as next goal, settles on what happened before closing.
Read the live section of the rulebook before you stake in-play. The delay length and the suspension rule are set by each book.
Postponement and abandonment
A match postponed before it starts is voided in common practice. A match abandoned after it starts depends on the market, and the book’s own rules page states which outcome applies.
- Abandoned before a result is decided: the bet is void and the stake returns.
- Abandoned after the outcome is already settled, such as a first goalscorer: the bet usually stands.
- Rescheduled inside the book’s stated window: the bet usually stands for the new date.
FAQ
What is a void bet?
It is a bet cancelled before or after the event, with the stake returned. Postponement, a non-playing athlete and an invalid market are common causes.
What is a push in betting?
A push happens when the result lands exactly on the line, such as a total of 48 on a line of 48. The stake returns and nothing is won or lost.
What happens to a parlay when one leg is void?
Common practice drops the void leg and settles the rest. The parlay price becomes the product of the remaining legs.
Do overtime results count for betting?
It depends on the sport and the market. Basketball totals and moneylines normally count overtime, while football match result markets normally exclude extra time. The book's own rules page governs.
