Decimal odds are the format that makes every other format easy to check. This page works through decimal odds from payout to probability, then shows the same price spelled four other ways. For the bigger picture of price, stake and settlement, read how sports betting works from price to payout.

Decimal odds explained

A decimal price is the total return for every 1 you stake, stake included. The payout formula has one step:

payout = stake x decimal price, and profit = payout minus stake.

StakePricePayoutProfit
1001.5015050
1001.9119191
1002.50250150
1005.00500400

Every decimal price is above 1.00. A price of exactly 1.00 would return the stake with no profit.

Odds to probability and implied probability

Implied probability is the chance the price assigns to the outcome. Divide 1 by the decimal price and read the result as a percentage.

Decimal priceWorkingImplied probability
1.501 / 1.5066.67%
1.911 / 1.9152.36%
2.001 / 2.0050.00%
3.001 / 3.0033.33%
5.001 / 5.0020.00%

Add the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and the total exceeds 100 percent. Two sides at 1.91 give 52.36 + 52.36 = 104.72 percent. The 4.72 percent above 100 is the margin built into the prices.

Fractional odds

Fractional odds state profit over stake. A price of 5/2 means you win 5 for every 2 staked, so a stake of 2 returns 7 in total.

  1. Convert to decimal: divide the fraction, then add 1. For 5/2: 5 / 2 = 2.5, plus 1 = 3.50.
  2. Convert to implied probability: denominator / (numerator + denominator). For 5/2: 2 / 7 = 28.57 percent.
  3. Check with decimal: 1 / 3.50 = 0.2857, which matches.

A price of 10/11 is the fractional twin of 1.91, because 10 / 11 = 0.909 and 1 + 0.909 = 1.909.

Hong Kong odds

Hong Kong odds show profit per 1 staked, with the stake left out. They equal the decimal price minus 1.

DecimalHong KongMeaning
1.910.91Win 0.91 per 1
2.501.50Win 1.50 per 1
4.003.00Win 3.00 per 1

A stake of 100 at Hong Kong 1.50 wins 150 and returns 250 in total. Because the format hides the stake, always add 1 before you work out an implied probability.

Indonesian odds

Indonesian odds use a sign. A positive price is the profit per 1 staked, the same as Hong Kong. A negative price is the stake you must risk to win 1.

  1. Decimal at or above 2.00: Indonesian = decimal minus 1. At 2.50 this gives +1.50.
  2. Decimal below 2.00: Indonesian = minus 1 / (decimal minus 1). At 1.91 this gives -1 / 0.91 = -1.10.
  3. Read -1.10 as: stake 1.10 to win 1.

The sign pattern matches American odds, where the minus and plus signs mark favourite and underdog, only scaled to 1 instead of 100.

From a price to a stake

A price tells you the book’s chance. Your own estimate of the chance tells you whether the bet has value, and that gap is the input to staking maths. The path is short:

  1. Convert the price to implied probability.
  2. Compare it with your own estimate.
  3. Size the stake only if your figure is higher. Kelly criterion staking from decimal prices uses the decimal price minus 1 directly in its formula. For a price of 2.10, that figure is 1.10.

FAQ

How do I calculate winnings from decimal odds?

Multiply your stake by the decimal price. A stake of 50 at 2.40 returns 120 in total, which is 70 profit after you subtract the stake.

How do I turn decimal odds into a probability?

Divide 1 by the decimal price. At 4.00 the implied probability is 1 / 4.00 = 0.25, or 25 percent.

Is a higher decimal price always better value?

No. A higher price means the book thinks the outcome is less likely. It is only value if your own estimate of the chance beats 1 divided by that price.

What is 2.50 in fractional odds?

2.50 equals 3/2 in fractional odds, because the profit per 1 staked is 1.50. In Hong Kong style it reads 1.50.
