Hedging bets lets you act when a ticket you hold is winning on paper but not yet settled. This page shows exactly what a hedge costs and locks in, using plain arithmetic, and then separates it from middling. For where hedging sits among all the bet types, read how sports betting works before you hedge.
Hedging bets: the idea
A hedge is a second bet on the opposite outcome of your first bet. Because the two outcomes cannot both happen, one ticket wins and the other loses, and you choose stakes so the total is acceptable either way.
Hedging bets changes the shape of your result. You trade a large possible win for a smaller guaranteed one.
| Position | Possible result |
|---|---|
| Unhedged | Large win or full loss |
| Hedged | Smaller, equal result |
A worked full hedge
You bet 100 at a decimal price of 5.00 before the event. That ticket returns 500 if it wins, a profit of 400.
Later, the opposite outcome is priced at 1.60. To lock in an equal result, divide the original return by the hedge price.
- Hedge stake = 500 / 1.60 = 312.50.
- Total staked = 100 + 312.50 = 412.50.
- Original wins: 500 returned, minus 412.50 staked, gives 87.50 profit.
- Hedge wins: 312.50 x 1.60 = 500 returned, minus 412.50 staked, gives 87.50 profit.
Either way you finish 87.50 ahead. Compare that with the 400 profit you gave up if the original ticket would have won. Decimal odds and how a price converts to a return covers the conversion used here.
Bet hedging: what it costs
Bet hedging has a price tag, and the table shows it for the example above.
| Outcome | No hedge | Full hedge |
|---|---|---|
| Original wins | +400 | +87.50 |
| Original loses | -100 | +87.50 |
| Gap between outcomes | 500 | 0 |
The hedge removes the 100 loss and also removes 312.50 of profit. It is worth it only if you value certainty more than that amount, or if you believe the original bet is now less likely than its price suggests.
A partial hedge
You do not have to lock in an equal result. A smaller hedge keeps some upside and still cuts the loss.
Hedge stake of 150 at 1.60:
- Original wins: 500 minus 100 minus 150 = 250 profit.
- Hedge wins: 150 x 1.60 = 240 returned, minus 250 staked, a loss of 10.
You now lose only 10 in the bad case instead of 100, and still keep 250 in the good case.
Middling
Middling is different from a hedge. You bet both sides of the same line at different numbers, hoping the result lands in the gap and wins both.
Take a game total. You bet over 45.5 at 1.91 for 100. Later the line moves to 48.5 and you bet under 48.5 at 1.91 for 100. Total staked is 200.
| Final total | Over 45.5 | Under 48.5 | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| 46, 47 or 48 | Wins | Wins | +182 |
| 45 or below | Loses | Wins | -9 |
| 49 or above | Wins | Loses | -9 |
Landing in the middle returns 191 + 191 = 382 on 200 staked, a profit of 182. Landing outside costs 9, because one ticket wins 191 against 200 staked. The risk is small and the payoff is large, but the middle window is narrow.
Sizing a hedge or a middle
A hedge should come from a plan, not a panic. Follow this order:
- Decide the loss you can accept before you place the first ticket, for example 100.
- Size the second ticket from that number using the hedge formula above.
- Check the locked result against the value of holding, then place it or leave it.
Kelly criterion stake sizing for the original bet shows how to set the first stake so a hedge is rarely needed.
FAQ
What is hedging in betting?
It is placing a second bet on the opposite outcome of an earlier bet. The second bet cuts your risk and also cuts your upside.
Does hedging guarantee a profit?
It guarantees an equal result whichever side wins, and that result is a profit only when the hedge price is favourable enough. The arithmetic below shows the break point.
What is middling?
Middling is betting both sides of a line at different numbers, so a result between them wins both. If it lands outside, you lose a small amount on one side.
Is hedging always the right move?
No. It costs the upside you gave up, so compare the locked amount with the value of holding the original bet.
