Football betting is a menu of markets that all ask a different question about the same ninety minutes. This page names eight common ones, shows how each settles with worked arithmetic, and tells you where the rule differs. For the price-to-payout basics behind every market, read how sports betting works before you pick a football market.

The eight football betting markets

Soccer betting and football betting are the same thing: the same sport under two names. These are the eight markets you meet first, with the price they usually carry as an illustration.

MarketWhat you predictSettles on
Win draw winHome, draw or away90 min plus stoppage
Double chanceTwo of the three results90 min plus stoppage
Draw no betA winner, draw refunds90 min plus stoppage
Football handicapWinner after a head start90 min plus stoppage
Total goalsOver or under a line90 min plus stoppage
Both teams to scoreEach side scores90 min plus stoppage
Correct scoreThe exact final score90 min plus stoppage
First goalscorerWho scores firstMatch events

Common practice excludes extra time and penalty shootouts from these markets. The book’s own rules page governs, so read the line for your match.

Win draw win

Win draw win is the match result market, also written 1X2. You pick one of three outcomes: the home side wins, the match is drawn, or the away side wins.

Three outcomes means three prices, and you can win only one. If the three prices are 2.10, 3.40 and 3.60, the implied chances are 47.62, 29.41 and 27.78 percent, a total of 104.81 percent.

A stake of 100 on the draw at 3.40 returns 340. Settlement uses the score at the end of 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

Double chance and draw no bet

Double chance covers two of the three results in one ticket: home or draw, away or draw, or home or away. It pays less because it wins more often.

Draw no bet removes the draw instead. Your side wins and you are paid at the price. Your side draws and the stake is returned as a push. Your side loses and the stake is gone.

A stake of 100 at 1.60 on draw no bet settles as follows:

ResultReturns
Your side wins160
Draw100 (push)
Your side loses0

Football handicap

A football handicap gives one side a head start in goals. A line of -1 on the favourite means the favourite must win by two or more goals.

  1. Favourite -1, wins 3-1: the margin is 2, so the bet wins.
  2. Favourite -1, wins 2-1: the margin is exactly 1, so a whole-goal line pushes and the stake returns.
  3. Favourite -1, draws or loses: the bet loses.

Half-goal lines remove the push. A line of -0.5 wins on any favourite win and loses otherwise.

Over 2.5 goals

Over 2.5 goals wins when the match has three or more goals in total. Under 2.5 wins on two goals or fewer.

Total goalsOver 2.5Under 2.5
0 to 2LosesWins
3 or moreWinsLoses

At a price of 1.85, a stake of 100 on over 2.5 returns 185 when the match ends 2-1. A line of 2.0 behaves differently: exactly two goals pushes both sides, so the stake returns.

Both teams to score

Both teams to score, shortened to BTTS, asks whether each side scores at least once. Yes wins on 1-1, 2-1 or 3-2, and loses on any scoreline where a side stays at zero, such as 2-0.

The final score is all that matters, so the order of goals does not count. At a price of 1.80, a stake of 50 returns 90, which is 40 profit.

2-1Wins

Correct score and first goalscorer are narrower. They carry higher prices because fewer outcomes win.

What if the match does not finish

Postponed or abandoned matches settle under the book’s own rules. Common practice voids the bet and returns the stake in these cases:

  1. Match postponed before kick-off: void.
  2. Match abandoned with the outcome undecided: void.
  3. Match abandoned after the outcome was decided: the bet usually stands.

Void bet and push settlement for football and other sports covers each case in detail. To compare prices across these markets, convert each to the same format with decimal odds payout and probability arithmetic.

FAQ

Does football betting include extra time and penalties?

Common practice is that regular markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time only. Extra time and penalty shootouts are excluded unless the market says otherwise, and the book's own rules page governs.

What does over 2.5 goals mean?

It wins if the match has three or more goals in total. A half-goal line can never land exactly, so the bet has no push.

What is the difference between soccer betting and football betting?

None in the markets. Soccer betting is the same sport under its North American name, with the same win draw win, handicap and goal total lines.

What happens to a both teams to score bet if a match is abandoned?

Common practice is that the bet is void unless the outcome was already decided before the stoppage. Read the book's own abandonment rule.
